Sketchup might be a little lighter, and simpler overall, if you just want something to construct basic models that can be exported later to any more advanced program (via standard 3d geometry formats, ie.obj, etc). I've been using Blender on and off for 7+ years doing random CAD and design, and I love it - it's easy to work with, starts fast and isn't too slow, and can do everything and more if I need it to (plugins, scripting, etc), plus being open source, it's all pretty much customizable, and again, is probably the largest/most-adopted open source 3d modeling program in existence.īlender might perform ok on your laptop, maybe not. It's actively maintained and sponsored, and lately has been adopted by more mainstream studios, replacing Maya/3Ds max, etc. It performs as good as all the other major softwares (regarding features), has many built in features and plugins, is performant/slim/well-coded, works on all operating systems, and is open source. Blender has been known as the industry-standard open source 3d modeling software for almost a decade.
